Anne Keothavong has qualified for the singles main draw at the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Tier II event in Stanford, California. The British No 1 won all three of her qualifying matches in straight sets and incredibly dropped only nine games along the way.
Keothavong sealed her place in the main draw with victory over France’s Julie Coin 6-1 6-0. In the opening two rounds, the 24 year-old defeated America’s Alexandra Podkolzina 6-0 6-2 and Belarus’ Tatiana Poutchek 6-3 6-3.
Keothavong will now meet India’s Sania Mirza in the main draw first round with the No 6 seed, France’s Marion Bartoli, waiting in the last 16. The top seed in the singles draw is America’s Serena Williams while Russia’s Anna Chakvetadze and Vera Zvonareva are also competing.
Keothavong is currently at a career high singles world ranking of No 82 after a fine recent run of form. In May, the National Tennis Centre based right-hander won a $50k title in Lebanon and backed this up by reaching the final at The Surbiton Trophy and winning her first round match at The Championships.
Georgie Stoop and Elena Baltacha were also competing in Stanford but both bowed out in the qualifying event. Stoop impressively won her opening two matches in three sets but eventually lost against Portugal’s Michelle Larcher Di Brito 4-6 0-6 in the final round. Baltacha lost a closely fought first round match against America’s Abigail Spears 5-7 4-6.
