Dementieva Wins Olympic Gold; Russians Sweep

BEIJING, China - Going up against arguably the hottest player of the season and having lost their last three encounters, Elena Dementieva's odds weren't looking that encouraging. But throughout her career - including on this very Olympic stage eight years ago - she has consistently defied those odds, and on Sunday in Beijing willed her way past Dinara Safina for the gold medal at the Games of the XXIX Olympiad.

This wasn't Dementieva's first deep run at an Olympic Tennis Event. In 2000 she burst into prominence with a surprise run to the final before falling to Venus Williams.

"I remember playing my first Olympic Games in Sydney. I was 18 years old and nobody expected anything from me. Nobody really expected any medals from Russia at that time. We were so happy to have Yevgeny Kafelnikov winning the gold medal and me the silver. It was a really exciting surprise for Russia.

"But coming here to Beijing, there were lots of expectations for our team. From the beginning, I think we were planning to get two medals. But this year we were guaranteed silver and gold, and we even had a chance to get all three of them."

Dementieva, who was the No.5 seed at the Olympic Tennis Event, got through her first three matches of the week in straight sets before going up against one of her toughest rivals, Serena Williams, in the quarterfinals. Williams, seeded No.4, had won four of their five previous meetings, and seemed headed to improve on that stat as she built a 63 42 lead; but Dementieva never threw in the towel, fighting back for a 36 64 63 upset victory, dashing the American's medal hopes.

In the semifinals she got past No.9-seeded compatriot Vera Zvonareva in a tight two-setter and in the final against another Russian, No.6 seed Safina - who had won 32 of her last 35 matches - she snatched victory from the jaws of defeat for the second time this week, rallying from a one set deficit to prevail, 36 75 63.

"My most difficult match of the week was today against Dinara because she's playing at her best," Dementieva said. "She's the hottest player on the Tour at the moment. It was really difficult to return her serve. After losing the first set, it was difficult to stay positive and keep doing the right things, not getting too emotional and thinking about every point. I'm so happy I got through it."

Perhaps previously best known for coming in second place - she was runner-up at the French and US Opens in 2004, and at the aforementioned Olympics in 2000 - Dementieva may now have shaken that tag after her brilliant play in Beijing.

"This is for sure the biggest moment in my career, in my life; I will never forget this moment," Dementieva said. "It's hard to believe actually. I was thinking about this for a long, long time, and I was getting ready mentally and physically. I was dreaming every day about it. But when it comes to you it's still a surprise. It's very difficult to explain the way I feel right now. It'll take a few days before I realize I'm an Olympic champion."

Russia actually ended up with the medal sweep, after Safina took away the silver and Zvonareva beat China's Li Na, 60 75, for the bronze.

Safina expressed her disappointment at losing in the final but was able to put things into perspective and walk away from the Chinese capital proud.

"I'm disappointed I lost, but on the other hand, what I've done, coming from the States, winning two tournaments in a row, I didn't have one normal day off. I took the flight from Montréal to Europe, from Europe to here. From all this scheduling, matches, doubles, singles, from what I've done, I think I can be proud of myself. It's sad it's not the gold medal, but it doesn't matter because I think what I've done, not many girls can do it."

"All the Russians were playing so well," Zvonareva said. "It's just amazing that we all were able to do so well here, to get three medals for our country. We're all very proud of it. Russian tennis is at a great level. It's at the highest level."

The doubles gold medal went to the No.2-seeded Williams sisters, who routed No.4 seeds Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual, 62 60. It was the second doubles gold medal for Venus and Serena, who also won the event in Athens in 2000. Both were ousted in the singles quarterfinals this year.

China didn't come away empty-handed on Sunday, however. No.8 seeds Yan Zi and Zheng Jie of China won the doubles bronze medal, beating No.6 seeds the Bondarenko sisters in straight sets, 62 62.

Safina, Dementieva Move Into Gold Medal Match

by TheUmpire @ 2008-08-16 - 22:50:25

BEIJING, China - It will be an all-Russian battle for gold at the Olympic Tennis Event in Beijing on Sunday, after Dinara Safina and Elena Dementieva both scored tight straight set victories in the semifinals on Saturday.Safina, the No.6 seed, won a much-hyped clash with unseeded Chinese hopeful Li Na, 76(3) 75. The two-hour, 10-minute duel was a showcase of power and precision from the baseline, with both players hitting hard, flat and precise groundstrokes; Safina was the tougher of the two at the end of each set however, hanging on in the tie-break in the first set and rallying back from 5-3 down in the second to close her oppponent out, her first win in their three meetings."I knew the crowd would be against me; I accepted it because for me it doesn't really matter who's sitting there and who's clapping for who," Safina said. "I just put everything on the court. I was just trying to stay focused, point by point.""She played very well today in spite of playing until almost 4am last night," Li said. "Although I lost today, I did my best. I believed in myself, that I could have won, but Safina was just better."Li had an incredible week in front of her Chinese home crowd, taking out two Top 10 players - Svetlana Kuznetsova and Venus Williams. Last year she became the first Chinese player in Sony Ericsson WTA Tour history to crack the Top 20, but she has since fallen out of the Top 40 due to a fragmented last 12 months, missing the entire second half of last season and the better part of the last five months as well, all due to injury. Safina praised the talented Chinese player."Last year she didn't play for six months, then this year she started the season unbelievable but was again unlucky with injuries," the Russian continued. "If she had played consistently for one year, you would see her in the Top 15."Dementieva, seeded No.5 this week, joined Safina in the final with a win over another Russian, No.9 seed Vera Zvonareva, 63 76(3). Dementieva seemed to be headed for a routine straight set win as she went up 63 42; Zvonareva broke back and took the second set to a tie-break but Dementieva took control once again, cruising to her fourth victory in their five career encounters."I'm very proud to represent Russia and to play an all-Russian final here in Beijing tomorrow; this is a big, huge moment in my career," Dementieva said. This isn't Dementieva's first deep run at an Olympic Tennis Event. In 2000 she burst into prominence with a surprise run to the final before falling to Venus Williams, coming away with the silver medal."I remember playing my first Olympic Games in Sydney. I was 18 years old and nobody expected anything from me. Nobody really expected any medals from Russia at that time. We were so happy to have Yevgeny Kafelnikov winning the gold medal and me the silver. It was a really exciting surprise for Russia."But coming here to Beijing, there were lots of expectations for our team. From the beginning, I think we were planning to get two medals. But right now it just seems unbelievable to get silver and gold. And we even have a chance to get all three of them. So it's huge for Russia."Dementieva and Safina have squared off seven times before, with Safina up in the head-to-head, 5-2. But perhaps more relevant is her record against her countrywoman this year: 3-0, with three set wins at Berlin and Roland Garros and a straight set win at 's-Hertogenbosch."At the moment, she's the hottest player on the Tour, winning everything," said Dementieva on Safina. "She has such a huge streak for the moment. It's going to be a tough match. We played three times this year and I lost all of them. So it's going to be quite a challenge for me. But I've also had some pretty good results this year. I think we both deserve to be in the final."Safina began the season with an 11-10 record but has since gone 32-3, winning Berlin, Los Angeles and Montréal and finishing runner-up at Roland Garros and 's-Hertogenbosch (her only pre-final loss came at Wimbledon, where she lost in the third round). She has now reached her sixth final in seven events.Li and Zvonareva will play the bronze medal match on Sunday as well. Li is 2-1 lifetime against Zvonareva, winning their first two meetings at Doha in 2006 and Indian Wells in 2007; in their only match this year, the Russian beat the Chinese in three sets in the semifinals of Doha.

Kirilenko avoids upset

Kirilenko avoids upset

MASON, Ohio (AP)—Third-seeded Maria Kirilenko avoided an upset and reached the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Women’s Open with a 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over qualifier Stephanie Dubois on Wednesday.

Kirilenko came from behind twice, after losing the first set and seeing her serve broken at the beginning of the third, to advance in the $175,000 tournament.

“I knew it was going to be a tough match,” said the 25th-ranked Kirilenko, who lost a third-set tiebreaker to the Canadian at Montreal last week.

Dubois broke the Russian in the first game of the third set and then hit the baseline with a lob to hold serve for a 2-0 lead. Kirilenko pulled even with a service break in the sixth game, and both players held serve until Dubois sent a backhand long on Kirilenko’s third match point.

“I made a lot of mistakes in the first set,” said Kirilenko, who reached the round of 16 in Germany and Rome earlier this year. “When the second set began, I decided I had to change up. I started hitting a lot of heavy balls and lobs, and I saw she didn’t know what to do with those. Sometimes, you have to win ugly.”

Kirilenko will play Sabine Lisicki, who beat Camille Pin 6-3, 6-4 to become the first player to reach the quarterfinals. Lisicki, a German ranked 81st on the WTA Tour, used a 7-0 advantage in aces to help overcome nine double faults to Pin’s two in beating the 78th-ranked Frenchwoman.

Davenport pulls out of singles

BEIJING, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Former Olympic champion Lindsay Davenport has withdrawn from the singles tournament in Beijing, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) said on Friday.
Davenport, who has been struggling with a right knee injury, is still hoping to play doubles with Liezel Huber.
The 32-year-old American has not played a match since Wimbledon in June where she was forced to withdraw in the second round.
Three-times grand slam champion Davenport, who came out of retirement last year after giving birth to her son with the specific intention of competing in Beijing, still hopes to win another medal to go with her gold from Atlanta in 1996.
"I'm fortunate to have the number one (doubles) player in the world as a doubles partner," Davenport told reporters.
The ITF said it would confirm who will replace Davenport on Saturday. The Olympic tennis tournament begins on Sunday.

Pam Shriver files for divorce from George Lazenby

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former tennis star Pam Shriver has filed for divorce from one-time James Bond actor George Lazenby.

Documents filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court cite "irreconcilable differences" for the end of the couple's six-year marriage. The pair have three children together, including twins born in 2005.

Shriver is seeking custody of the children, with supervised visits for Lazenby.

The 46-year-old Shriver, who won 22 Grand Slam doubles titles, has served as a tennis commentator since retiring.

The 68-year-old Lazenby is perhaps best known for his one-movie stint as James Bond in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service."

Pacific Life No Longer Sponsor of Indian Wells Tennis Tournament

The Indian Wells ATP Masters Series and WTA Tour Premier Tennis Tournament is without a title sponsor. The event has been known as the Pacific Life Open since 2002, but the insurance company will no longer sponsor the event.

Tournament Director Steve Simon tells KPSP that it was the tournament's decision to part ways with Pacific Life following a successful seven year partnership. A spokesman from the insurance company tells KPSP that they had a great relationship with the tournament and they are parting on very good terms.

Simon hopes to have a new title sponsor lined up by the end of August who will help to make the tournament an even bigger event. The tournament broke attendance records in 2007 and 2008, with over 330 thousand going through the gates this year. Simon sees a day when up to 600 thousand fans come to Indian Wells to watch the world's best tennis players.

Simon declined to say how much a title sponsor might pay, but did say "There are a lot of zeroes involved."

The Indian Wells tournament was last without a title sponsor in 2001 when it was known as the Masters Series Indian Wells Presented by Newsweek. From 1988-1999, the tournament was known as the Newsweek Champions Cup.

This year's tournament is scheduled to be played March 9-22 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The tournament is the fifth largest tennis event in the world, behind only the four grand slam events.

Tennis stars fume over heat, pollution

BEIJING -- Soaring heat and humidity and choking pollution have hit the build-up to the Olympic tennis tournament with top stars lining up to complain.

With big-name players sweating through practices in sauna conditions, the temperature and overhanging smog have been the main talking points at the open-air Olympic Green Tennis Center.

Incoming world number one Rafael Nadal, dripping with sweat during a practice match with Fernando Gonzalez, accidentally broke a racquet when it slipped out of his hand on serve.

Women's number two Ana Ivanovic appeared exhausted during a work-out on Wednesday, doubling up on court to catch her breath.

And players beaded with perspiration have been toweling off and drinking gallons of liquid as they go through their routines in the oppressive heat.

Gonzalez, who is bidding to defend his doubles title with Nicolas Massu, admitted conditions were extremely difficult with temperatures of up to 34 deg C (93 deg F) and unpalatable smog.

"The conditions are really tough with the pollution and it's really hot. We don't have too many days to adapt so I hope to be much better than today," he said.

Slovakian beauty Daniela Hantuchova said she had never experienced such heat.

"It's tough. It's maybe the hottest weather I've experienced," she said. "Hopefully it can cool down."

Meanwhile, Australia's Samantha Stosur said conditions were "pretty rough" and among the most difficult all season.

"It is very hot and very humid and the sun isn't even out yet so I'm sure it will probably only get worse from here," Stosur said.

"It is unpredictable and probably the hottest conditions we are going to play in all year."

The heat and humidity of a Beijing summer, along with chronic pollution, have been major concerns for participants in the Beijing Games, which open on Friday.

Many athletes arriving in the Chinese capital have expressed concern about air quality, including four members of the US cycling team who wore masks as they emerged from the city's airport.

On Wednesday, much of the Games complex was just a blur from Olympic Green, just over two kilometers (a mile and a half) away.

According to Australia's Alicia Molik, heat and pollution were all part and parcel of playing in China.

"I've been in China seven or eight times. I'm very used to playing in the heat and experiencing the thick air," she said.

"Tennis players are used to experiencing so many things. It's just something that you have to get on board with and work around.

Former world number one Lleyton Hewitt admitted high temperatures and humidity could be a problem but insisted he enjoyed playing in hot weather.

"I had a hit out there today. The smog didn't worry me. I think the heat and humidity will cause more of a problem but I like to play in these conditions," Hewitt said.

And Tommy Robredo hoped the heat would give Spanish players an edge.

"We already just came from Cincinnati, but here it's really hot. It's really humid," Robredo said.

"Because the weather in Spain is so hot I think the Spanish players will be in better condition physically and that will be an advantage."

Putin wishes Beijing Olympics great success

by TheUmpire @ 2008-08-06 - 19:29:59

MOSCOW, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has spoken highly of China's preparations for the upcoming Beijing Olympic Games and wished the Games a complete success.

"I'd like to express gratitude and pay great tribute to the host -- our Chinese friends. I know China has made great efforts in preparing for the Games to fulfill its pledges for Olympics of the highest level," Putin said in a recent written interview with Xinhua.

The prime minister thanked Chinese President Hu Jintao for inviting him to the opening ceremony of the Games, saying he will definitely be present.

Putin condemned attempts to politicize the Olympics, describing them as "trampling on the Olympic spirit." "The Olympics are competitions for athletes, not for countries," Putin said, citing Pierre de Coubertin, known as the father of the modern Olympics.

Noting the basic Olympic values of international solidarity, common understanding and cooperation, Putin said distrust and conflict were against the Olympic spirit.

The Olympics in the first place are grand sports gatherings and their importance, entertainment and influence on people across the world are beyond the reach of any other sports event, Putin said.

Russia fully supports the Beijing Olympics, he said, recalling that Russia was among the first to share the joy with China when Beijing won the right to host the 2008 Olympics seven years ago in Moscow.

China's experience in organization, technology and information support for such a big sports event is also "crucial, interesting and beneficial" for Russia, he added.

Putin expected the Russian team to make unprecedented achievements and "write down a brilliant and unforgettable chapter" in Beijing.

However, he refrained from predicting the number of medals Russian athletes could possibly garner at the Beijing Games, citing an ancient Chinese philosopher Laozi(570-490 bc), who said "People who think too much of themselves won't excel."

"Experts say we have good chances in rhythmic gymnastics, wrestling, tennis, boxing, track and field, shooting, synchronized swimming and judo," he said instead.

As for himself, Putin said sports, which have helped him keep fit and gain an inner balance, did a lot in shaping his personality. He believed that every sport is good in some aspects and everyone can pick up one that suits him- or herself.

Talking about judo and skiing, which he favors and is good at, Putin said judo is a physical and mental exercise. It develops one's strength, reaction and endurance, educates one about self-control and observation, and requires sustained self-perfection, which he said are qualities indispensable for politicians.

Putin praised highly the Chinese-Russian relationship and expressed confidence that bilateral relations would continue developing rapidly and bringing benefits to their two peoples.

"Russia and China have a unique mechanism of regular meetings between their premiers, which is conducive to finding coordinated solutions to problems and achieving win-win results," Putin said.

Efforts to consolidate cultural and trade cooperation are an indispensable extension of the Russia-China political dialogue of mutual trust, he said, adding that events during the reciprocal national years in Russia and China showed broad prospects for continuing the dialogue, consolidating the economic and trade links and enhancing friendship and mutual trust.

Some of the interesting activities during the national years, such as seminars, trade fairs, cultural festivals and sports events, will be held again in the future, said Putin.

The two sides are planning to host the "Year of the Russian Language" in China and the "Year of the Chinese Language" in Russia. Young people are most welcome to the events, as they will pass the Sino-Russian friendship to the new generation, he said.

On the massive earthquake that hit southwest China in May, Putin said it is necessary to "give our helping hand to the Chinese." A total of 1,000 children in the affected area would come to Russia for rehabilitation this year.

Ancic withdraws from US Open with mononucleosis

NEW YORK (AP) - Croatia's Mario Ancic withdrew from the U.S. Open on Tuesday with a recurrence of mononucleosis, the second straight year the 25th-ranked player was forced to miss the tournament.

Ancic, a former Wimbledon semifinalist, was slowed throughout the 2007 season because of mononucleosis.

He pulled out of the Open last August because of an injured right shoulder.

Ancic beat Roger Federer in the first round at Wimbledon in 2002.

That had been Federer's most recent loss there until Rafael Nadal beat him in the final this year.
